In a world of hyper-communication, when having a mobile phone, PC and other such hi tech devices means you never really leave the office, as emails and other data sweep in from your office constantly even when you’re at home, it’s hard to detach from work. Increased responsibilities, competitive corporate environments and intense job demands means it is often hard for employees to stop working, relax and take time to have their own personal life, dedicating time to the hobbies and people they love. Here’s how to be hardworking but not sacrifice your personal life.
Work hard so that you can play hard
When you’re at work focus almost exclusively on work, unless you’re on a break. Take mental or physical note of everything work related, engage with your colleagues, listen to your boss and complete your tasks in a timely, assiduous fashion. Don’t spend your day on social media, chatting with friends or shopping on the internet. Don’t let office gossip or too many breaks in the coffee room distract you from the work you need to do. If you optimize your time and cut down on distractions you will be able to work harder. This means when you leave the office all your tasks will be under control and you can spend the rest of the evening relaxing and playing as hard as you work.
Don’t bite off more than you can chew
Make sure you manage your bosses and colleagues’ expectations for you. If you don’t have time to take on extra work, or a looming deadline means you can’t give time to a colleague to lend them a hand, or lead a new project because you have another one on the go, then you need to say no. If you’re asked to perform work that doesn’t fall within your role, just politely say no. Everyone wants to be liked and say yes to everyone to please them, but you need to learn to please yourself first. You can’t say yes to everything or you’ll bite off more than you can chew and won’t have a second free for yourself. Do the work you need to do to the best of your ability, don’t try to do everything, or all your work will be mediocre at best.
When your day at the office is done, learn to turn it all off. Don’t go home and keep continuously checking your work emails or your business’s social media account, or spend every spare moment networking with colleagues. Make sure you have your own distinct personal life by disengaging completely, otherwise you may end up not only compromising your own health but also alienating family and friends. You may need to learn to turn off your phone and computer. Having hobbies that remove you from your work environment and get you into another frame of mind and place is very beneficial. You might attend a yoga class, a cooking course, go to the theatre, music concerts or simply dine out regularly with your family and friends. No matter what you chose, make sure you turn off work distractions, like your phone, to truly enjoy your time away from the office. Resting and relaxing means you can return to the office recharged and ready to perform to the highest of your ability, instead of working constantly and burning out. If you work hard, you deserve to play hard too.
